Capturing History: Documenting Virgin Galactic’s Unity Space Mission
Michael Haluwana’s work as the first international photographer to join with Virgin Galactic on documenting the Unity spacecraft’s historic final mission, its remarkable 7th flight in space exploration - a significant chapter in pioneering research and technological advancement.
Michael’s journey involved extensive G-Force training, enduring up to 5G’s on the flight to capture high-end professional photography and videography of the spacecraft during launch and re-entry to Earth. The experience of flying alongside a spacecraft in mission mode was both challenging and surreal — a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness humanity’s bold strides into the final frontier.
The visuals from this mission not only serve as invaluable scientific documentation but also aim to inspire future generations, preserving the legacy of Virgin Galactic’s contributions to space exploration. This project underscores the power of visual storytelling in celebrating human ingenuity and innovation in space travel.

Planet Earth III – Capturing the Ever-Changing World
Michael Haluwana was honoured to contribute his cinematography to Planet Earth III, the highly anticipated sequel in the BBC’s iconic nature documentary series. Narrated by Sir David Attenborough and featuring an original score by Hans Zimmer, the series takes viewers on a breathtaking journey through Earth’s evolving habitats, revealing the beauty and fragility of our planet.
Filmed over 5 years across 43 countries and 6 continents with 134 individual shoots - 50 of which were managed remotely due to the travel restrictions in place during the COVID-19 pandemic, Planet Earth III utilised groundbreaking cinematography techniques to document rare species, never-before-seen animal behaviours, and extraordinary natural events. From the first onboard view of a southern right whale to stunning footage deep within Vietnam’s Hang Son Doong Cave, the production team succeeded in pushing the boundaries of wildlife filmmaking and the latest technology.

Planet Earth II – A Landmark in Nature Cinematography
Michael Haluwana had the privilege of contributing to Planet Earth II, the groundbreaking 2016 nature documentary series produced by the BBC Natural History Unit in collaboration with BBC Studios, BBC America, ZDF, France Télévisions, and Tencent.
Narrated by Sir David Attenborough with an original score by Hans Zimmer, the series set new standards in wildlife filmmaking, utilising cutting-edge Ultra HD (4K) technology to capture the natural world like never before.
A sequel to the acclaimed Planet Earth (2006), this visually stunning production took audiences on an immersive journey through Earth’s most diverse landscapes. Praised as one of the greatest nature documentaries of all time, Planet Earth II received universal acclaim, winning multiple BAFTA and Emmy Awards.
